Holding Series, 2021

The drawings in the Holding series were developed during the 2021 Covid lockdown in Sydney.

Starting with a gouache base and charcoal drawing, they quickly became a symbol of trying to hold onto something that was slipping away.

The transparency and text overlay, added at a later stage, shifts the base drawing ever so slightly, heightening the sense of loss, uncertainty, and displacement.

Antipodes

The expanded drawings in this series started as an exploration of ideas of impermanence as a metaphor for presence, memory, and loss. They attempt to capture the porousness, fragmentation and instability of memory whilst also leaving traces of the past.

The materials used either have a ‘memory’ and can return to their original state (metal mesh, wire), or have transparent, see-through qualities (flyscreen, plastic sheet) that allow a glimpse beyond.

Sun and shadows have been utilized to encapsulate the idea of things/beings reacting to and being affected by their environment and external circumstances, constantly shifting as time progresses.
